UFC on ESPN+ 22: Jan Blachowicz narrowly out-points Jacare

Brazilian fans frustrated with lack of action in main event

No. 6 Jan Blachowicz (25-8-0) carefully used his striking to defeat No. 8 Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (26-8-0), 1NC) in a close split-decision in the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 22 in Sao Paulo.

“Jacare,” 39, came into the bout with the hometown crowd in his corner. But while he tried to keep Blachowicz up against the fence, he failed to muster the offence needed to convince the judges, prompting many of the fans to express frustration for more action.

Meanwhile, the 36 year old Blachowicz, who hails from Poland, used kicks and strikes from the outside to keep his opponent’s attempts at bay, though he did seem to injure his left foot somewhere in the middle of the contest.

The judges scored it 47-48, 48-47, and 48-47 for Blachowicz.

Blachowicz bravely called for a title shot in the post-fight interview with Michael Bisping.

Though the No. 6 Blachowicz picked up his fifth win in his last six contests, the victory tonight paled in comparison to the exciting knockout of Luke Rockhold previously, It will probably not be enough to leapfrog the top five and snatch the next title light heavyweight title shot.

Souza acknowledged afterwards that he failed to impose his game plan in his light heavyweight debut, but felt he won three rounds, despite Blachowicz hurting his legs in the fourth round, which lowered his aggressiveness.

Charles Oliveira, James Krause, Ricardo Ramos, and Randy Brown all earned performance of the night bonuses of $50,000 USD apiece.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.
