Conor McGregor (21-4-0), the former UFC featherweight champion and one of the most charismatic personalities ever in MMA, will return to the octagon at UFC 246 in January 2020.
UFC president Dana White confirmed with ESPN.com on Thursday that McGregor will meet another charismatic UFC personality – ‘Cowboy’ Donald Cerrone (36-13-0, 1NC) – in Las Vegas in a welterweight contest.
“Conor has signed, and Cowboy is ready to go,” White said to ESPN.
McGregor is currently ranked No. 3 in the official UFC lightweight rankings, while Cerrone is ranked No. 5.
The Irishman’s last UFC bout was a submission loss to lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October 2018. Previously, he left MMA to take on Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring. He lost to Mayweather via an entertaining 10th round TKO.
Cerrone, 36, has dropped his last two fights, both by TKO stoppage, to Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, respectively. Despite the current skid, Cerrone remains highly respected among his peers and fans alike for his exciting style and willingness to fight anyone.
