UFC on ESPN 9: Tyron Woodley vs. Gilbert Burns confirmed as main event

Another opportunity for Burns to leapfrog into title contention

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley gets his chance to make his case for a title shot in seven days.

The UFC confirmed Friday that Woodley (19-4-0) will face up-and-coming Brazilian No.6  Gilbert Burns (18-3-0) in the main event of UFC on ESPN 9 next Saturday at the APEX One in Las Vegas.

Woodley, 38, has not seen action since losing the belt to Karamu Usman at UFC 235 in March 2019. He was supposed to rematch Robbie Lawler in June 2019 but a hand injury forced him to pull out. There was also a fight lined up with Leon Edwards in March 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the card.

Meanwhile, Burns, 33, has rattled off five straight wins, including a short-notice finish of Demian Maia at UFC on ESPN+ 28 in March.

UFC on ESPN 9 is scheduled to take place Saturday May 30 at the APEX One in Las Vegas. The card is expected to air on ESPN and live stream on ESPN+. Scheduled bouts include:
