UFC on ESPN 9: Woodley vs. Burns predictions

Both fighters looking to make a statement

The UFC is in Las Vegas this week as former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley takes on rising star Gilbert Burns in the main event.

One fighter, lightweight Brok Weaver missed weight and will forfeit 20 per cent of his purse to opponent Roosevelt Roberts.

Other than that, we are all set for action Saturday night.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.

MAIN CARD

MACKENZIE DERN (7-1-0) VS. HANNAH CIFERS (10-4-0)

UFC on ESPN 9

Andrews: I like this fight. Cifers has the edge striking wise, but no one wants to get caught on the ground with Dern. I really like Cifers, and would not be shocked if she bullied Mackenzie, but I have to assume Dern has made enough improvements to her standup to get the decision.

Andrews Prediction: Mackenzie Dern via UD

ROOSEVELT ROBERTS (9-1-0) VS. BROK WEAVER (15-4-0)

UFC on ESPN 9

Andrews: Both guys are over 6 feet, tall for a lightweight but they weigh less than Allen Iverson. Both are DWCS alum, but Brok missed weight. Have to go with Roberts to get the stoppage.

Andrews Prediction: Roosevelt Roberts via TKO

BILLY QUARANTILLO (13-2-0) VS. SPIKE CARLYLE (9-1-0)

Andrews: Good catchweight fight. Both are good finshers, but I’m going with the “Alpha Ginger” in a furious finish.

Andrews Prediction: Spike Carlyle via TKO

BLAGOY IVANOV (18-3-0, 1NC) VS. AUGUSTO SAKAI (14-1-1)

UFC on ESPN 9

Andrews: Blagoy has the wrestling to grind out a win, but I’m expecting Sakai to grind out an impressive TKO.

Andrews Prediction: August Sakai via TKO

TYRON WOODLEY (19-4-1) VS. GILBERT BURNS (18-3-0)

UFC on ESPN 9

Andrews: Burns is a tough up-and-comer, but a motivated Woodley is simply too dangerous. He knows he needs to make a statement.

Andrews Prediction: Tyron Woodley via TKO
