UFC 250: Nunes vs. Spencer predictions
The main event for UFC 250 tonight in Las Vegas is official.
Featherweight champion Amanda Nunes (145) and challenger Felicia Spencer (144.5) both weighed in successfully, as did all other fighters for tonight’s event.
One fight was temporarily removed however, because a cornerman initially tested positive for COVID-19. It turned out that it was a false positive, and the Ian Heinisch vs. Gerald Meerschaert bout was restored.
Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.
ALONZO MENIFIELD (9-0-0) VS. DEVIN CLARK (11-4-0)
Andrews: Clark is adequate, but has faltered in key bouts and hasn’t finished anybody since 2016. Meanwhile, the lesser experienced but dangerous DWCS alum Menifield took out the much bigger Paul Craig in less than a round. I can see Clark trying to play it safe, but Menifield goes for the finish and gets it.
Andrews Prediction: Alonzo Menifield via TKO
#4 JUSSIER FORMAGA (23-7-0) VS. #9 ALEX PEREZ (23-5-0)
Andrews: Formaga is a good fighter but at 35 he is now vulnerable to the young dogs of the flyweight division. Alex Perez at 28, is one of those dogs who has the tools but not necessarily the experience to beat a guy like Formaga. A close fight, but I think Formaga uses that experience to grind out the win.
Andrews Prediction: Jussier Formaga via SD
PRELIMS (8PM ET/5PM PT)
CHARLES BYRD (10-6-0) VS. MAKI PITOLO (12-5-0)
Andrews: Both guys are exciting to watch. I like how Byrd goes for the win, and sometimes to his detriment. A close fight, but I am going with Byrd to score the finish.
Andrews Prediction: Charles Byrd via TKO
#12 CODY STAMMAN (18-2-1) VS. BRIAN KELLEHER (21-10-0)
Andrews: Kelleher has looked good in his past few fights, but Stamman is a quality fighter who is not shy about grinding out a win. I have to go with Stamman to play it safe and grind out the win.
Andrews Prediction: Cody Stamman via UD
#13 IAN HEINISCH (13-3-0) VS. GERALD MEERSCHAERT (30-12-0)
Andrews: I like the experience of Meerschaert here. Heinisch has to keep the fight standing, but Meerschaert has proven he can strike and submit.
Andrews Prediction: Gerald Meerschaert via UD
ALEX CACERES (15-12-0, 1NC) VS. CHASE HOOPER (9-0-1)
Andrews: Caceres is a solid fighter, but Hooper is on another level.
Andrews Prediction: Chase Hooper via submission
MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)
EDDIE WINELAND (24-13-1) VS. SEAN O’MALLEY (11-0-0)
Andrews: It’s real simple. Wineland is good, but O’Malley is better.
Andrews Prediction: Sean O’Malley via TKO
NEIL MAGNY (22-7-0) VS. ANTHONY ROCCO MARTIN (17-5-0)
Andrews: Magny has proven to be a well-rounded guy who may not blow you away with power, but with smarts. Martin is an up-and-comer who with a good ground game but only one knockout win. If Magny can stuff the takedown and avoid the ground, he should be able to get the decision.
Andrews Prediction: Neil Magny via UD
#2 ALJAMAIN STERLING (18-3-0) VS. #4 CORY SANDHAGEN (12-1-0)
Andrews: Dana White said the winner likely gets the title shot. Both have fought good opponents and it’s a close fight on paper. But I think Sandhagen is better at grinding out a win than Sterling and he will do it again here.
Andrews Prediction: Cory Sandhagen via UD
#5 RAPHAEL ASSUNCAO (27-7-0) VS. #9 CODY GARBRANDT (11-3-0)
Andrews: Assuncao is 37. He’s been good for a long time, but new-and-improved Cody will need to strike intelligently and not bang. If Cody can not strike, or gets taken down, then Assuncao gets the win. I believe in the new Cody.
Andrews Prediction: Cody Garbrandt via TKO
AMANDA NUNES (19-4-0) VS. FELICIA SPENCER (8-1-0)
Andrews: If Spencer can get the takedown, then she can make the fight interesting. Nunes did look human in her last fight, so a well-placed shot could do it too. But the all-around game of Nunes should overcome Spencer in the championship rounds.
Andrews Prediction: Amanda Nunes via TKO
