UFC 252: Miocic outworks Cormier to retain heavyweight title and win rubber match

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic retained his crown with a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 252 in Las Vegas Saturday night.

Crossfire Vault – Andrews: May the best octagon heavyweight ever win at UFC 252

Miocic endured a Cormier eye poke in the first round and used the clinch and striking to neutralize the constant pressure of Cormier. But the bout will probably be remembered for the Miocic eye poke in the third round that affected Cormier’s vision for the rest of the fight.

A obviously disappointed Cormier said in the post-fight interview that he could not see in the eye after the poke. But Miocic used crisp and constant striking to the body, while Cormier score with occasional power shots.

Miocic almost finished the fight near the end of the second round, dropping Cormier stand forcing him to hug Miocic’s mid-section until the horn.

But while Cormier continued to try and pressure Miocic, he could not land the big strike to slow Miocic down.

The judges scored it 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47.

The win marks Miocic’s first defence of his belt since winning it back from Cormier at UFC 241. He wins the rubber match and is considered by many to be the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time.

Cormier retires as one of the greatest of all time with his accomplishment of being the dual concurrent light heavyweight and heavyweight champion standing out.

Kai Kamaka III and Toney Kelley earned Fight of the Night, while Daniel Pinada and Virna Jandiroba earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.
