The UFC’s second event of its January triple-header is ready to go after all 28 fighters, including main event welterweights Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny, made weight at Fight Island.
Chiesa (170), ranked No. 8 in the welterweight division and No. 9 Magny (171) weighed in and are ready to move forward in the rankings with a big win.
This is a big card, with 14 fights scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 20. It will be aired on ESPN and live streamed on ESPN+.
Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.
MAIN CARD (12PM ET/9PM PT)
LERONE MURPHY (9-0-1) VS. DOUGLAS SILVA DE ANDRADE (26-3-0)
Andrews: Murphy will have a height and reach advantage, but can he handle the power of De Andrade. De Andrade has a big experience advantage, but he has had trouble with fighters who can move out of the way and work on the ground. Murphy uses his noodle to get the decision.
Andrews Prediction: Lerone Murphy via UD
TYSON NAM (20-11-1) VS. MATT SCHNELL (14-5-0)]
Andrews: Nam is 37 years old. Yet Schnell has more UFC experience, with some good wins over Smolka and Espinosa. Close fight early, but I think Schnell uses the ground game to grind out the decision.
Andrews Prediction: Matt Schnell via UD
ROXANNE MODAFFERI (25-17-0) VS. VIVIANE ARAUJO (9-2-0)
Andrews: The only thing with Araujo is she can be outstripped, and though Roxanne is older, she is still a good technical striker. And Roxanne has enough BJJ to attack and defend. Going with “The Happy Warrior” to work her gameplan.
Andrews Prediction: Roxanne Modafferi via UD
ISAAC VILLANEUVA (17-11-0) VS. VINCIUS MOREIRA CASTRO (9-4-0)
Andrews: Both fighters have a lost a total of five straight fights. Castro needs the ground, so I am firmly going with Villaneuva, who goes out on his shield going for the win.
Andrews Prediction: Isaac Villaneuva via TKO
WARRLEY ALVES (13-4-0) VS. MOUNIR LAZZEZ (10-1-0)
Andrews: Lazzez is the underdog, facing a veteran like Alves. He came through in his last fight, and he shockingly comes through again here.
Andrews Prediction: Mounir Lazzez via TKO
MICHAEL CHIESA (18-4-0) vs. NEIL MAGNY (24-7-0)
Andrews: Close fight. Magny is a safe and technical guy, doesn’t take many chances and gets the decision. Yet Magny has many more knockouts (7) then Chiesa (0). Magny takes advantage of Chiesa’s aggressiveness and grinds out another decision.
Andrews Prediction: Neil Magny via UD
