MMA journalist Ariel Helwani says he is leaving ESPN effective June 15

'I found a lot of things that really got me excited'

Prominent MMA journalist Ariel Helwani is moving on from ESPN.

Helwani took to his social media to explain his decision to leave the UFC’s broadcast network partner, recalling moments from his three-year tenure.

Helwani, a Montreal native who lives in New Jersey, hosted several shows at ESPN, including the MMA show as well as several NBA assignments over his three year stay. He said he was offered a new contract, but that it was “100 per cent my decision” to leave and is “excited by a lot of new opportunities” that he will explore.

The fans were also mentioned and thanked by Helwani as well as the ESPN staff, management, and colleagues like Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen.

The move is effective June 15, almost five years to the day when Helwani and some colleagues were escorted out from UFC 199.

An announcement is expected to confirm Helwani’s next destination soon.
