Tokyo 2020: Merven Clair of Mauritius decisions Canada’s Wyatt Sanford

Learning experience for Nova Scotia native

It was a tough opening bout for Nova Scotia’s Wyatt Sanford at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Sanford lost a unanimous decision to Mauritius native Merven Clair early this morning and has been eliminated from the Round of 32.

The official score was 5-0 with Clair earning 10-9 scores for all five rounds.

Clair used an aggressive attack to pressure Sanford for large portions of the bout. Sanford tried to plod through it but the southpaw was unable to land enough punches to advance.

Sanford was the only male on the Canadian boxing team and will now have to focus on the 2024 Games in Paris.

Teammate and Olympic medal hopeful Mandy Bujold competes later tonight in her first bout against Serbia’s Nina Radovanovic.

The rest of Team Canada’s boxing schedule at the Games is:

July 24 – 10:48 p.m. Round of 32 – Mandy Bujold (CANADA) vs. Nina Radovanovic (SERBIA)

July 27 – 6:54 a.m. ET – Round of 16 Myriam Da Silva (CANADA) vs. Maria Moronta Hernandez (DOMINICAN REPUBLIC)

July 27 – 11:18 p.m. ET – Round of 16 – Tammara Thibeault (CANADA) vs. Nadezhda Ryabets (KAZAKHSTAN)

July 26 – 1:12 a.m. ET – Round of 16 – Caroline Veyre (CANADA) vs. TBA

Enjoy the fights.
