Canadian welterweight Myriam Da Silva has some added motivation in her preliminary bout against Maria Moronta Hernandez of the Dominican Republic.
With Olympic teammates Wyatt Sanford and Mandy Bujold eliminated in first-round losses, Da Silva will look to advance on July 27.
Da Silva (30-15-0, 1 KO), 37, a teacher and 8-time national champion, won a silver medal at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Peru.
Meanwhile, Moronta (8-6-0, 0 KOs), 25, will have a youth advantage going into the contest but will be giving up some experience to Da Silva, at least on paper. Ranked in the top 5 according to the AIBA rankings, she won a bronze medal at the same 2019 Pan Am Games where Da Silva won silver at.
The bout is scheduled for July 27 at 6:54 a.m. ET.
The rest of Team Canada’s boxing schedule is:
