Tokyo 2020: Maria Moronta of the Dominican Republic eliminates Canada’s Myriam Da Silva

Back to the drawing board for Da Silva

It was another tough opening round loss for the Team Canada boxing team Tuesday morning.

Maria Moronta of the Dominican Republic cruised to a 5-0 win over Myriam Da Silva of Canada Tuesday morning, advancing to the women’s welterweight quarterfinals.

The judges scored it 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 for Hernandez.

Keeping her guard high, Hernandez repeatedly broke through the defence of Da Silva and landed consistent strikes to the head.

The result was disappointing, considering Da Silva, who hails from Chambly, Quebec, performed well at the 2019 Pan Am Games against the current gold medal favourite Oshae Jones, where she collected a silver medal.

But Hernandez collected a bronze at the same Pan Am Games too and it was clear she was looking for more in Tokyo.

Hernandez will face Jones in the quarterfinal.

Canadian featherweight Caroline Veyre, fights today against Italy’s Irma Testa in a quarterfinal bout, while middleweight Tammara Thibeault takes on Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals July 31.
