Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata is still in critical condition in the ICU after losing consciousness after a Saturday night bout in Montreal.
[Editor’s Note: Zapata passed away Thursday afternoon.]
Zapata, 18, was knocked out with a right hook in the fourth round of a six round welterweight bout with Quebec’s Marie-Pier Houle at the GYM Gala International Boxing event at the IGA Stadium in Jarry Park. The blow knocked out Zapata’s mouthguard and after the bell rang, she suffered convulsions and was rushed on a stretcher to hospital by her trainer, the event’s on-site paramedics and the event’s doctor.
While we pray for Jeannette Zacarias Zapata spare a thought also for Marie-Pier Houle. Of course there was no intention of this happening but I am sure she is utterly devastated. pic.twitter.com/IxWd2ujsBR

Montreal boxer Adonis Stevenson suffered a similar brain injury three years ago, which put the former world champion in the hospital for three weeks in a coma.
Houle took to social media to express her sadness and thoughts for Zapata’s quick recovery.
According to the promoter Yvon Michel, Zapata is in stable condition but the next few days are critical for survival.
Zapata underwent and passed all the pre-medical and neurological exams for the fight, which were mandatory because of a knockout loss last May.
Zapata’s injury has brought back questions about the safety in combat sports such as boxing.
A GoFundMe page has been created by Moe Latif and as of this writing, approximately $11,000 has been raised towards the goal of $14,000.
The situation continues.
