UFC middleweight contender Paulo Costa may not make weight with days to go before his main event bout with Marvin Vettori.
Costa (13-1-0), 30, spoke to reporters today at the UFC Fight Night 196 pre-fight press conference, saying that he weighs 211 pounds but that fight will probably happen at a catchweight – assuming Vettori wants the fight to happen.
“I think this fight will happen just will not happen if he do not want to fight me,” Costa said. “Maybe we can do catchweight, 90 kg, I don’t know.”
Vettori had stated earlier to reporters that Costa was heavy and that he was concerned that fight ma be cancelled.
“He’s a lot overweight,” Vettori said. “He’s a lot overweight. We’ll have to find some solution. I’ll say, ‘Yes, let’s do it at 205.’ He should be able to do better than that, but worst case I’ll still fight him at 205.”
Costa declined to explain why he came in heavy, saying that he will after the fight.
The UFC has not yet officially responded or changed the matchup to a catchweight.
