UFC 270: Francis Ngannou takes unanimous decision over Ciryl Gane to unify heavyweight title

Will the champ re-sign with the UFC?

It wasn’t the barnburner the fans were expecting, but Francis Ngannou did what he had to on the ground to reign supreme at UFC 270.

Opponent and interim champion Ciryl Gane came out and tried to use the clinch to wear out Ngannou from the opening round and it looked like it was working. By the end of the second round, Ngannou appeared fatigued.

But Ngannou turned the tide in the third round, driving Gane into the canvas after catching a Gane kick and even landing a judo throw that Ronda Rousey would have been proud of. The fourth round saw Ngannou enjoying a lot of ground control, although he wasn’t able to inflict much damage.

Gane tried to look for heel hook and leg submissions in the final round on the ground, but was unable to secure anything.

The judges scored it 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46.

With the win, Ngannou (17-3-0) earned his first title defence and now the focus turns to his contract negotiations with the UFC for a new deal.

In the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Ngannou said he hurt his knee three weeks ago and considered pulling out of the fight.

Gane (10-1-0) suffered his first defeat in his career since making his pro debut just over three years ago.

Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo earned Fight of the Night while Vaness Demopoulous and Said Nurmagomedov earned peformances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

Kenai Andrews checks in in with his thoughts on the card.
