UFC Vegas 47: Sean Strickland comfortably split-decisions Jack Hermansson

Sean Strickland used his boxing to outpoint Jack Hermansson in the main event of UFC Vegas 47 in Las Vegas Saturday night.

Strickland emerged from a close first round with a knockdown of Hermansson in the second frame, and then used strikes to the body, stuffed takedowns, and a constant ration of trash talk to keep Hermansson at bay until the final bell.

The judges scored it 49-46, 47-48, and 49-46.

With the win, Strickland (25-3-0) stays within range of the top 5 but it may not have been impressive enough to leapfrog him into the title shot conversation. In the colourful post-fight press conference, he admitted he could have performed better and “took his foot off the gas,” chalking it up to being rattled by title shot talk by the media.

Hermansson (22-7-0) has not split his last six fights.

Julian Erosa and Steven Peterson earned Fight of the Night, while Shavkat Rakhmonov and Chidi Njokuani earned performances of the night. Erosa doubled with $100,000 USD due to Peterson missing weight, while the other fighters earned $50,000 USD apiece.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.
