Cain Velasquez denied bail

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will remain behind bars in the Santa Clara County main jail after a bail hearing Monday.

Judge Shelyna Brown made the decision after arguments from Velasquez representative and celebrity attorney Mark Geragos and district attorney Aaron French to hold Velasquez, calling his actions “reckless”  and “the risk too great” for release.

The next court date for Velasquez is April 12.

The courthouse was well attended with Velasquez supporters and there was even an outburst from the gallery, for which Judge Brown admonished with a warning.

After the proceedings, Geragos spoke outside the courthouse.

“Is there anybody out there who finds it to be beyond the pale that a father was not consulted when they released the perpetrator back into the public with zero-dollar bail, yet they are holding Cain on no bail?” Geragos asked rhetorically. “This is why people are disgusted – and rightfully so – with the criminal justice system.”

Geragos did not take any questions from reporters.
