Andrews: What’s going on? Let Will Smith and Chris Rock work this out – diplomatically

What's going on?

Whoever expected a UFC moment at the 94th Academy Awards probably cashed in a big ticket Sunday night.

What’s going on?

It was the slap heard ’round the world when Will Smith apparently took offence to a joke made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and proceeded to calmly walk up to him and slap him across the face.

Smith then sat down and yelled from his seat: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.”

Rock took it well. He tried to explain after acknowledging to the crowd that “Will Smith just slapped the sh*t out of me,” that it was a GI Jane joke.

Rock previously joked about Pinkett Smith at the 2016 Oscars with Smith responding then with the same comment.

“That was the greatest night in the history of television,” Rock said moments later while presenting the best documentary award.

Will Smith

Amongst the online memes and jokes about the incident, there is a serious issue here.

Should anyone be able to assault anyone for insulting their family?

So far, the LAPD has confirmed that Rock declined to file a police report on the incident. Speculation is already running rampant about what he will do next. But you have to him credit for being a pro and finishing the awards ceremony. Any actions by either party could have consequences that could affect their career and even their lives.

Instead of clamouring for the two of them to enter the octagon or Triller, Smith and Rock, both pillars of the African-American community, should be encouraged to settle their differences in private.

I know it’s not an exciting approach for fight fans, but diplomacy would be the best result for Smith, Rock, and the community. Because when you really think about it, we can’t have people jumping on stage trying to slap comedians or anyone for a perceived insult.

Let Smith and Rock work things out and let cooler heads prevail. And you know what? With a nudge from colleagues like Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and others, I think it will happen.

That’s what should be going on.
