Bellator 281: Logan Storley ekes out split-decision victory over MVP in London

It wasn’t the most spectacular of victories, but Logan Storley is now the Bellator interim welterweight world champion after Bellator 281.

Taking on dangerous striker and hometown hero Michael Page in his hometown of London, Storley relied on his wrestling and grappling to neutralize Page on the canvas.

Page did have some spurts, including a flying knee in the final round that just missed its mark, but was on the defensive for most of the fight.

The judges scored it 48-47, 47-48, and 49-46 for Storley, who was unapologetic to the fans in the post-fight interview for dragging the fight to the ground.

The ground remains the kryptonite for Page, who in his brief moments, had Storley tentative on the feet and the crowd hopeful for a repeat of other hometown hero Paul Daley’s performance against Wendell Giacomo a few bouts earlier.

But, it was not to be. Storley (14-1-0) registered his third consecutive victory and will probably rise to No. 1 in the rankings when they are updated. Page (20-2-0) had his six-fight win streak snapped with the defeat.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.

BELLATOR 281 MAIN CARD

SIMON BIYONG DEF. LUKE TRAINER VIA UD (29-27, 28-27, 29-28)

Andrews: Biyong did what he had to do to get the win.

PAUL DALEY DEF. WENDELL GIACOMO VIA TKO (PUNCHES) R2 4:09

Andrews: Wow! Daley was getting controlled on the ground and then took advantage of his lone opportunity to end the fight. And now Semtex is retired.

KANA WATANABE DEF. DENISE KIELHOLTZ VIA SUBMISSION (TRIANGLE CHOKE) R2 3:03

Andrews: Watanabe was almost finished early, good job to hold on and then secure the choke in the next round.

FABIAN EDWARDS DEF. LYOTO MACHIDA VIA TKO (ELBOW AND PUNCHES) R1 3:18

Andrews: What an elbow off the break. It’s time for Machida to retire.

MAIN EVENT

#1 MICHAEL PAGE VS. #4 LOGAN STORLEY

WINNER: LOGAN STORLEY VIA SD (48-47, 47-48, 49-46)

Β Andrews: Page couldn’t keep the fight standing and Storley used his wrestling. Page needs to develop more of a ground game.

The next Bellator event is Bellator 282, which is scheduled for June 25 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi defends against Johnny Eblen in the main event.
