UFC 279: Nate Diaz chokes out Tony Ferguson

Nate Diaz returned to the winner’s circle at UFC 279, submitting Tony Ferguson in the main event in Las Vegas.

It was a fight that Nate Diaz made sure to control the pace of, almost from the start via his boxing, which Ferguson tried to counter with leg kicks with some effect. But Ferguson was outstruck, with Diaz scoring  with combinations that opened up a cut under the right eye of “El Cucuy.”

In the fourth round, Diaz secured a guillotine choke after stuffing a Ferguson takedown attempt. Referee Marc Goddard halted the contest at 2:52.

The win gave Diaz a win in his final fight on his UFC contract after approximately 15 years in the octagon. He lost his previous two contests.

Meanwhile, Ferguson has now lost five straight bouts, three of them finishes. Many fans expressed concern at his performance and suggested retirement. But there was no hint of retirement from Ferguson after the bout.

Diaz, Irene Aldana, Johnny Walker, and Jailton Almeida all earned performances of the night and a $50,000 USD bonus apiece. There was no Fight of the Night.
