UFC Vegas 60: Doctor stoppage gives Corey Sandhagen crucial TKO win over Song Yadong

UFC bantamweight Corey Sandhagen protected his No. 4 ranking with a crucial stoppage win at UFC Vegas 60 Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Sandhagen (15-4-0) mixed up his attack with a steady diet of takedown attempts throughout the first three rounds, but it was an elbow in the second frame that produced a cut above Yadong’s (19-7-1, 1NC) left eye and would prove to be the key strike in the contest.

Yadong continued to fight through the leaking cut, stuffing most of Sandhagen’s takedown attempts and looking for submissions when the fight went to the ground. He connected on a left hand that stunned Sandhagen in the second and fourth rounds, but was unable to follow it up.

Despite some good work from the cutman during rounds, Yadong’s cut continued to leak, prompting a visit from referee Herb Dean and the doctor between rounds to evaluate it. After the fourth round, the fight was stopped.

The scorecards revealed the fight was even going into the final rounds, with Yadong taking the first two frames and Sandhagen capturing the last two.

With the win, Sandhagen snapped a two fight losing skid and likely retained his No. 4 ranking and stays in the bantamweight title shot conversation. Yadong had a three fight win streak stopped with the loss.

Gregory Rodrigues and Chidi Njokuani earned Fight of the Night ,while Joseph Pyfer and Damon Jackson earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.
